Healthy Foods that Boost Your Brain Power

You learned how important your brain is in school and if that didn’t hammer the point home, your mom has yelled at for you for years telling you not to drink alcohol or do drugs because it kills your brain cells. On the other side of the spectrum, you may have heard that there are ways you can boost your brain power and promote good brain health. There are exercises you can do to stimulate your brain, but there is an even easier way to naturally boost your brain power and it all comes down to eating healthy.

Study after study has proven that consuming certain foods can make your brain healthier, which boosts its ability to keep your body functioning properly as well.

Foods to Eat

Fish. Your brain contains DHA, which is a form of omega-3 fatty acids and studies have shown that consuming the right amount of omega-3 fatty acids provides you with emotional balance and positivity. While it may put you in a better mood, researchers believe it also helps to prevent emotional problems as you age such as the depression and memory loss associated with Alzheimer's. And one Harvard study showed that people who had higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids in their diets were less likely to get Alzheimer's. So be sure to add fish to your grocery list; it’s good for your brain.

Blueberries. Your brain also contains free radicals that rid your body of toxins. If you have too many free radicals in your brain, it can impair your cognitive skills, but eating foods such as blueberries that contain antioxidants can help to control the amount of free radicals in your brain. With a balanced amount of free radicals, you’ll keep your brain healthier and more balanced. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture blackberries, cranberries, strawberries, spinach, raspberries, plums, avocados, oranges, red grapes, cherries, and kiwis are other foods rich in antioxidants.

Water. Ok, so water isn’t technically a food, but it is for your brain. With 80% of your brain being made up of water, it’s important to keep it hydrated. A dehydrated brain can become stressed, which can cause damage over time. So be sure to get in your eight, eight ounce glasses of water each day.

Nuts. Foods such as nuts that are high in protein give your brain energy. And when your brain has energy, it gives the rest of your body energy too. Nuts make a great snack for your brain and the rest of your body. Other foods that are high in protein include eggs, lean meat, poultry, soy, dairy products and beans.

So there it is. Eating healthy is a good way to keep your body fit and trim and it’s a great way to keep your brain fit too. Study after study has proven that by including certain foods in your diet promotes good brain health. So eat more fish, drink more water, stock up on the right fruits and veggies and add some protein to your diet.
